"French to Triple AIDS Budget"

Associated Press (11/03/88)

Paris--French Health Minister ClAUde Evin announced Thursday that France will triple its budget for AIDS research and quadruple funding for education to prevent the spread of the disease. Evin said the government will "mobilize every Frenchman and woman" in the fight. Evin told the daily Le Monde that AIDS will kill more French citizens that traffic accidents in three years, and can no longer be considered a disease that affects "marginal" people. France is predicting 4000 AIDS deaths in 1989 and 8000 in 1990. Evin announced that AIDS research will receive 150 million francs, or $25 million, and education spending will increase to 100 million francs, or $16 million. Hospitals will receive 430 million francs, or $70 million, to treat AIDS patients. Evin urged citizens to use condoms to "brake the transmission and development of this disease." He also said the government will establish a National AIDS Council to recommend further actions and an agency to coordinate actions by different government bodies.
